How to Prepare Your Car for Shipping

How to Prepare Your Car for Shipping

You have decided to move to another state, and chose to take your car with you. Since driving long distances is not only tiresome, but potentially dangerous, you have decided to hire a reliable auto shipping company to transport your four-wheeled friend. You found the right people, called them, agreed on the price and set the date. What now?
Before your car transporters arrive, you need to make sure that your vehicle is ready for shipping. So in order to make that task easier, we at USA Auto Transport put together these instructions. Simply follow the steps below, and your car will be ready in no time.

Step 1: Wash Your Vehicle

No, car transporters aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. The point of washing your car before transport is the fact that all the existing scratches and other damage will be more visible afterwards. So make sure you clean your car before moving to the next step.

Step 2: Make Record of Existing Damage

Now that your car is clean, it is much easier to spot any dents, scratches, paint chips, or discoloration. Make a list of every single such damage you see. Note what kind of a damage it is and where it is located. Then take pictures, so you can compare your car to them after the delivery.

Step 3: Remove Your Belongings

Car transport companies are just that – companies that transport cars. This means cars only. So don’t count on being able to sneak something else in the trunk or the glove compartment. This could result in fines and termination of your agreement with the company. In addition, removing anything that can be removed will decrease the chances of your valuable belongings being stolen, lost, or damaged.

Step 4: Make Sure Everything Is In Its Place

If there are any loose parts in your vehicle, make sure you either fix them in their place or remove them. For example, if your car’s radio is removable, make sure you take it out. Fold your side view mirrors and retract your antenna.

Step 5: The Final Check-Up

Even more importantly than anything else aforementioned, you should make sure your car is functional. If your car is inoperable and you are aware of it, make sure you let your car transporters know well in advance. As for operable cars, the final check-up is a must. This includes:
– Checking and topping off all fluids in your car
– Checking your tires, making sure they aren’t punctured or deflated
– Checking your battery and recharging it if necessary
– Recording your mileage
– Noting any mechanical issues

Step 6: Empty the Gas Tank

Your gas tank should be only around 25% full. Anything more than that will increase the overall weight of your vehicle, and consequently the price of the shipping. However, make sure the tank isn’t completely empty, as it has to be driven on and off the auto carrier.

Step 7: Get an Extra Key

The auto transporter will need your car key in order to operate the vehicle (that is, to drive it onto the carrier). However, giving the only set of car keys you have to someone is never a good idea. So make sure you have an extra key just in case.
