Compare Shipping Methods – Open vs. Enclosed Transport
When shipping a car to Michigan, you’ll need to decide between two main types of transport: open and enclosed car shipping. Open auto transport is the most common method, accounting for around 90% of all shipments nationwide.
Open transport is significantly cheaper than enclosed transport, which is especially important if you have a low relocation budget. Additionally, due to the popularity of open carriers, there are more options available – which means shorter wait times and faster deliveries.
However, one of the downsides to open transport is that your vehicle is exposed to Michigan’s unpredictable weather. In the southeastern area of MI, known as “The Thumb,” residents typically experience about 42.3 inches of snowfall throughout the winter season. However, in the Upper Peninsula, snowfall averages over 115 inches. Vehicles transported in open carriers are vulnerable to snow, ice, and salt damage.
